Samuel Rees describes Blamires' role (see David Jones Bibliography for John Matthias' book, "David Jones: Man and Poet," p.507): "A labor of scholarship and love by the society's first and only secretary, who wrote, edited, collated, stapled and mailed 38 issues over a period dating March, 1976 to November, 1984. No one, apparently, volunteered to take over the work at that date and so, in Blamires' closing words, " it may be...that the newsletter has served its purpose and lived its natural life." The David Jones Society was founded in 1975, and numbered around 130 members at its peak."

(Jim) Ede dated 9/16/63 from Northwick Lodge, DJ describes a meeting with Igor and Vera Stravinsky: "I was greatly honoured and extremely astonished by a visit at Whitsuntide by Stravinsky and his wife. He was on a visit to London and apparently had read something or other of my work and wanted to come and see me. I said, when phoned up about it, that I would go to London to his hotel, as he is over eighty, but they said no, he wants to come and see some of your visual art. Well, they came, and were absolutely sweet, both of them, straightforward, direct, appreciative, amusing and relaxed..." ("Dai Greatcoat..." pp.192-3).

DESCRIPTION: Contains carbon typescript of a letter addressed to H.S. (Jim) and Helen Ede. The typescript is probably by Ede, sent to HG. The former was a close friend and early collector of DJ's artwork. John Matthias describes Ede as a "selfless supporter of Jones' work" (p.108). Ede was the founder of Kettle's Yard, Cambridge University (1957), which was the realization of his dream "of somehow creating a living place where works of art could be enjoyed, inherent to the domestic setting, where young people could be at home unhampered by the greater austerity of the museum or public art gallery and where an informality might infuse an underlying formality" (Matthias, p.109). Correspondence between Ede and DJ, as well as much of his visual work, are deposited at Kettle's Yard.
